Everyday I had many layers of clothes to wear. First, I
would put on a corset which would hold in my waist. I would wear a gown or dress
with a pettycoat. Depending on the occasion, I might put on sleeve ruffles for
a fancier look. Usually I would put on shoes with buckles. A bonnet or a cap
would go on my head or sometimes even a wig.
I followed my husband in to the war where he fired the
cannon. Then one day a British soldier shot him and he died. There ws
no one else to takeover the cannon so I had to do it. A canon is very difficult
to work with. It could backfire, fire at the wrong place, or even explode! It
was a tough, but I kept at it.
Food was good but not as good as at home. Each solider
would get 1 pound of meat and some flour to make bread if you were lucky.
Some people would use iron barrel hoops to make utensils for cooking. You
would also get a wooden plate and fork. It was pretty hard in the army.

My arm stung as we swayed back and forth on the ferrie taking
me to a hospital. I had been shot in the left shoulder. When I got to the hospital,
they said I would be paralyzed for life. I could not use my left arm at all.
There are rumors that I might get a pension from the government. I would be
the first woman to ever get one.
I was the first woman to ever get a pension from the United
States of America. Can you guess who I am?
