Hello! We made it through our first full week of third grade! Woohoo! It has been a week of getting to know one another, to figure out class routines, and to get back in to the swing of school. They are such a sweet group!!

If you haven't already done so, please fill out a quick form for me so that I have everyone's correct contact information. It's listed in the "Paperwork" section of our website (or click here).

In Writers Workshop this week, we began writing quick narratives; quickwrites. We brainstormed topics kids could write about, unique to each person. Students put their possible writing topics into a "Heart Map." This heart map can be used to get ideas! Students also worked on a narrative about a small moment from their summer. A small moment is a great way for writers to focus on details on a moment rather than big ideas. They learn to describe a moment, rather than retell. For example, rather than telling about the entire baseball game they went to, they tell about the moment they saw Buster Posey hit a home run. Getting thoughts, feelings, surroundings into the story brings it to life! We'll be working on this skill for a couple of months.

In Readers Workshop, we practiced how to find good, appropriate books to read and how to be sure they are getting hte most they can out of their books. One way students can better comprehend what they are reading is to talk about it. Ask your child what they are reading but ask specific questions. You don't need to have read the book. However, you can ask questions such as, "Who is the main character and what kind of person is he/she?" or "Predict what you think will happen next in your book. What makes you think that will happen?" Guiding the conversation allows kids to think more deeply about what they're reading!

In math this week we had some quality time with mindful math. I love starting the year this way because it shows students good mindsets to be successful.

The five main ideas we talked about this week are (click each to watch the video I started each lesson with):

I love all of these!! I know that when we begin Engage New York with multiplication next week, these third graders brains will be ready!

Next week we'll also begin Studies Weekly. This is our Social Studies program. Each week student's will receive a newspaper. We'll read the paper thorughout the week and a quiz will take place each Friday. The newspaper is also available online!! Today in class we used our brand new ChromeBooks for the very first time to practice logging into Studies Weekly. Lots of cool stuff there!

Pull-out classes will begin next week! This includes, science, music, recorder (!), PE, and library.

I hope to see you all at Back-to-School Night this Wednesday, August 28th at 6:30!!!

Hello families!! Welcome to the 2019-20 school year!! I know that this is going to be a wonderful year :). I thoroughly enjoyed meeting you third grader this week and look forward to getting to know them all better!

This week we had fun learning all about each other and learning things we didn't know about old and new friends. These kids are very swet to one another and they work as a team! Great start!

If you haven't already done so, please fill out a quick form for me so that I have everyone's correct contact information. It's listed in the "Paperwork" section of our website (or click here).

Also, please check out our class supply list! Anything you can help with is greatly appreciated!!

Next week we'll be starting our reading and writing workshop programs. The first unit in Writers Workshop is called Crafting True Stories. In this unit we will spend a lot of time discussing how to take a big moment and pull out a small moment in order to tell it with lots of detail. This makes for interesting reading! In Readers Workshop, students will explore what they loke about reading, how to choose appropriate books, and where good spots to read are. We have already begun silent reading in class and they're doing really well!

In math next week we will be working on mindful math. Mindful math works on getting students to accept that math is a process that everyone can do! There are strategies to make math easier and more approachable and, thus, are super helpful! Most importantly, we'll talk about how important mistakes are! It is a wonderful curriculum created by a team at Stanford under the direction of Jo Boaler, Stanford professor.

Pull-out classes will begin on Monday, August 26. This includes, science, music, recorder (!), PE, and library.

I hope to see you all at Back-to-School Night on Wednesday, August 28th at 6:30!!!
