Thoughts from Tuesday Night
Dear Loma and CT Parents and Guardians:
It’s March 1st. Amazing! The old saying that March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb is a bit unsettling to us given what January and February brought, but we will get through whatever comes. The timing of our February Recess could not have been better this year. In addition to continued preparation from a facilities standpoint, the teachers have created back up “continuity of instruction” plans to utilize should the schools close again. Working with the County Office of Education to avoid penalties for storm related closures – including the need to add additional days to the end of the school year – we are now prepared to “go virtual” if necessary. Teachers have adapted tools they will be incorporating into day-to-day instruction to ensure ease of use when needed. These tools will also help students who miss school due to illness as well as students on independent study for extended absences. I appreciate that your kids’ teachers have been so determined to get here under extreme circumstances and have embraced the effort to provide continuity as necessary going forward.
Shout Out to the Summit Store
When it comes to above and beyond, I want to also give thanks to Darrell, Karen, Ben, Lindsay and their team for all they have done for our community for so long. I am sure I don’t even know the half of it, but I know that the extended Osborn family has been there for all of us during difficult times. Summit Store was there after the Loma Prieta Quake in ’89. They have been on the front lines feeding fire fighters and other first responders. Ben answers his phone in the middle of the night and opens up when the community needs him to come through. He even put his cell number on Facebook!
I have noticed that the closure of Soquel San Jose has drastically altered the traffic on the mountain. While I welcome that in the morning, I worry about local businesses who depend upon the flow and all the regular customers it brings. Partners stand with one another during difficult times. The Summit Store has stood with Loma and CT as donor, supported, and more over the years. As they have helped to sustain our schools through the rough patches, I encourage everyone to support Summit Store now. We need them, and I imagine they need us.
Join Us Tonight – Post Fire Restoration Conversation!
Tonight, we will meet from 6 to 7 pm in the Loma Prieta Elementary School Forum. The district has selected the McKim Design Group as the architectural firm to support the design and reconstruction of our spaces lost to the fire. Come join in a discussion about what can and should be included in the restored space. Staff will present an update to the timeline for re-opening the building as well as taking community input on the creative process to restore our square footage lost to the fire.
