Thoughts from Tuesday Night
Dear Loma and CT Parents and Guardians:
Everything needs a “dashboard” in the 21st century and schools just got theirs. The State Board of Education (SBE) and the California Department of Education (CDE) unveiled the California School Dashboard last week. This new web-based information portal provides parents, educators, and the public with important information they can use to evaluate schools and school districts in an easy-to-understand report card format.Under the old “No Child Left Behind” system, the state used the “API,” or Academic Performance Index,” to rate schools primarily on state wide standardized test scores. Our target was to keep our schools above 800. The new California School Dashboard is an essential piece of California’s new school accountability and improvement system which replaces the former approach which was retired three years ago.
“The California School Dashboard provides local communities with meaningful and relevant information on how well schools and districts are doing,” said State Board of Education President Michael W. Kirst. “It will help in local decision-making by highlighting both the progress of schools and student groups, shining a light on disparities and helping stakeholders pinpoint where resources should be directed. “As exciting a development as this is, it’s important to understand that the California School Dashboard itself is a work in progress. It will be a far more valuable tool one year from now and three years from now than it is today as more indicators come online, as feedback is incorporated, and as improvements are made,” Kirst said.
It is a good first step for the state to move to a multiple measures format that looks at a variety of data sets to paint a broader picture of school performance. We will strive to keep our results in the blue and green zones in the new color coded system. In schools as small as Loma and CT, it is also true that our sample sizes for certain areas are too small to be statistically valid or may be skewed by one or two student variations.

KEEP on Golfing!
The KEEP campaign is in full swing, and for even more fun consider joining us at the annual “Fore the Kids” Golf Tournament. I am a terrible golfer, but it is some of the most fun I have golfing each year. For the competitive golfer, De LaVeaga offers many challenges. For the casual golfer like me, the course is gorgeous and the company excellent. Please see Ben Abeln’s golf update below.
