    Thoughts from Tuesday Night

    Dear Loma/CT Parents and Guardians:

The News is All Good Today!

    KEEP is On a Roll!

Thanks to the generous contributions of parents right out of the gate, LPEF has funded “Tier One” which includes PE for Loma and continued library services for both schools!  Thank you!!!!!

Now we are working on Tier Two.  This includes student support services, counseling, CT elective flexibility, and options for 8th graders. We have been fortunate to have been able to expand our elective options for our middle school students due to parent support.  Geometry, STEM, Art, Music, Spanish, and Leadership are all options for 8th grade and beyond.  Your support of KEEP, will directly impact the options for our middle school students.

Additionally, what we have discovered in the last several years is that the need for support services for most kids has expanded K-8. The pressures of social media even in the lower grades, the complexities of early adolescents, learning to navigate the anxieties of growing up, gaining independence, and social stressors in general have accelerated in recent years. Student supports also include after school tutorials, our handwriting club for young writers, support for our English Language Learners, reading intervention support for our emerging readers, math supports in our larger classes, and more.  You can help us keep all our exceptional programs going! Please see LPEF’s message below.

    Lakeside Parcel Tax Passes!

I know this is old news to our Lakeside families, but we are happy for them – and for us.  The Lakeside partnership is good for our kids as expanding the social network in middle school is important before high school. The revenue this partnership brings to Loma is significant as well and helps us secure additional electives and lower class sizes at CT.  Keeping strong schools on our mountain is important to all of us.  I am happy for the Lakeside community and appreciative of our collaborative approach to give mountain kids great educational options.

Putting the FUN Back in Fundamental (No Pun Intended)!

The last two years we have been putting lots of things back together – the band, the gym, the community center complex, and more.  There is one more FUNdamental project I am working on this spring – bringing the golf tournament back to an LPEF powerhouse FUNdraiser.  LPEF has a new president this year – Ben Abeln of Summit Store fame.  Ben is a Loma/CT alum, a Loma and Building Blocks dad, an enthusiastic fixture at the Summit Store, and the guy I have on speed dial when something urgent is needed at 2AM.

Ben is making the golf tournament his signature event this year.  We all love the Summit Store, Ben, the Osborn Family, and this winter has been brutal on them.  This is our chance to help Ben and Co. put the golf tournament back on the map by showing our support for their continued commitment to our schools and community!  Sign Up!  Some of you love to golf and De Laveaga is a gorgeous venue.  Break out those dad clubs and show off your swing!  For those of us who can only break 80 on the front nine, come on out for “hit and giggle!”  It will be a blast!

We are so fortunate to have our major sponsors stick with us year after year.  Thank you Rebecca and Mark Smith, Jonathan Tal, and Chris Carlo for your major sponsorships.  It takes a mountain and we will have more sponsors next week.  Don’t miss out on the chance to make a difference “Fore the Kids” and “Tee it up for Ben and the Summit Store Team!”

    From Ben and LPEF:

The 7th Annual " Fore The Kids" Golf Tournament is fast approaching this May 19th. We are taking this event old school by going back to the days of a delicious Summit Store, CB Hannegan's BBQ dinner. Some of our food sponsors will include: La Croix, Tito's Vodka, Internal Water, Cliff Bar, Oxygen Water, Bounce Bar & Harmless Coconut Water just to name a few.

Our corporate sponsors will be announced in next week's campaign, but a big thank you to the major sponsors for stepping up so early:

Back By Popular Demand – Common Core Math Night!

The shift in curriculum to the national standards in math is often challenging for parents working with kids at home. We are once again inviting you to join us for a math evening with some of our amazing teachers – Mrs. Nefian, Mrs. Lyon, Mrs. Dufort, and Ms. Drazen.  Please join us in the Loma Forum from 6:30-7:30 pm Thursday, April 13th.  This evening will be targeted to grades four through eight, but all are welcome.

    Got Questions?

Please join Board President Deana Arnold and me for coffee and conversation on Wednesday, April 26th, at 8:30 a.m. in the art room.  Come hear about progress on the reconstruction, building and field master plan update, and many other topics related to next year and beyond.  Bring your questions, comments and concerns, and join us from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m.  See you there!

    Sip For Our Schools Event

Each year, Loma Prieta Winery invites local school parents and community members to its "Sip For Our Schools" fundraising event. The winery generously donates 50% of the proceeds to LPEF! Thank you to Paul & Amy Kemp (owners of Loma Prieta Winery) for again generously donating and investing in our local schools and community.

The Loma Prieta Winery offers an array of award-winning wines in a one-of-a-kind setting with Monterey Bay and Santa Cruz Mountain views.

    This event takes place:

    A Message from LPEF

To Loma Prieta and CT English Parents and Guardians,

As our KEEP! Fundraising efforts shift into gear, we are pleased to announce that we have funded our Tier 1 priorities for the 2017-18 school year. Your commitment to making our children’s education something richer and more well rounded than state financing will allow is a tribute to your sustained and continued generosity.

So (as they say), if you’re keeping track at home, we have funded the following for next school year:

    Developmental Physical Education at Loma

    Library Services at CT English

    Library Services at Loma Prieta

This week of our KEEP! (Keep Excellent Education Programs) Campaign we turn our attention to Tier 2 priorities:

K-8 Student Support Services and Counseling

Core Flexibility and Elective Options for 8th Grade

Tier 2, as with Tier 1, are priorities that we are already currently funding and would very much like to keep. The first of these Tier 2 priorities is largely self-explanatory and, we believe, bestows a benefit for our entire community.

The second Tier 2 priority will allow eighth grade students to continue to pursue elective options including engineering, foreign language, advanced math and yearbook. These academic and extracurricular offerings not only nurture academic and creative advancement, they’re important touchstones in a vibrant middle-school experience.

We consider the funding of these Tier 2 priorities an entirely worthwhile endeavor and hope you’ll give consideration to our suggested KEEP donation amounts of $800 for one child and $1,200 for two or more.  Any donation amount is greatly appreciated and will help our community reach our goal.

Please visit our website at www.lpef.org/keep for donation information or complete a donation form from our website or in the school offices.  As always, if you have any questions or comments, please reach out to me at president@lpef.org or another LPEF Volunteer Governing Board member.

    Thank you,

    Ben Abeln

    LPEF President
