Thoughts from Tuesday Night
Dear Loma and CT Parents and Guardians:
Thoughts from Tuesday Night
We Are Who We Are Because of You
Today, the teachers and staff had a chance to say thank you to the many volunteers who help make our schools vital places to learn and to work. The “can do” spirit of the mountains is reflected in our classrooms through the countless hours that parents, guardians, grandparents, and more share with us. We know that a large portion of what we accomplish each year is made possible by you, your neighbors, and the parents of your kids’ friends. Without you, our schools would be very different places. The sweat equity of parents makes a difference for every child even when their parent isn’t there or can’t be there. Whether it is regular support in the classroom, the Snack Shack, out on the field with kids, or event support such as chaperoning a field trip or dance, helping with the Jog-a-thon, laying sod, or any other of the hundreds of tasks that evolve during a school year, your rolling up your sleeves to help others sends a powerful message to your kids and your school community. Thank you for caring! Thank you for going the extra mile this year! Thanks for being you!
Online Student Records Coming Soon to an Elementary School Near You!
We are very excited to be moving to an online student records system that will allow parents to update information online as needed. One of the goals of this effort is to reduce the number of forms you have to fill out every year. We also are working to have a means to update urgent contact information easily throughout the year.
The first step in the process for Loma families is to have parents self-enroll in our PowerSchool portal. Middle school families have been using this tool successfully for years, and now Loma will be joining in the electronic records system. The records available for Loma families will include demographics (which includes our urgent contact info) and attendance. We are working towards all fields being accessible for parent updates, and this is a first step.
In the next few days, your will be receiving, via USPS, a set of directions, user id, and temporary password to create your account. It is very important that you complete your registration by May 26th so that we can enroll your child in their next year’s grade.
Thank you for your partnership in moving us to a fully digital solution for student information and registration.
Speaking of Graduation – An invitation to 5th and 8th grade parents
We have begun our graduation prep. Please start looking for 3-5 digital photos of your kids that you would like included in our pre-graduation slide shows. The photos can be of any age, at school, home, anywhere. Our slide show plays before the graduations begin. Please send the fifth grade photos to Christine Taylor at Christine@freshideasdesign.com and the eighth grade photos to me at firstname.lastname@example.org for inclusion in the showcase. If you have cute photos of groups of kids, I would love to have a few extra of those. The NEW deadline for submission is May 30.

THE AFRICAN LIBRARY PROJECT
You will soon notice the arrival of boxes in the school lobbies. Last year they were used for collecting children’s books for sending to South Africa.
We are very excited, as this will be the 10th library that will be sent from the Santa Cruz Mountains. Each library consists of 1,200 books so it requires everyone to look through their much-loved, very good condition books for K- 8th graders (especially the primary level) and bring to school the ones they no longer need. We know children love their books but it is a wonderful feeling to know that a child will read their books who may never have read a book before. We have sent libraries to Botswana, Zambia, Malawi, Swaziland, Lesotho, Sierra Leone and most recently South Africa.
Can your child find these countries on a map? All the details about the project can be found at:
www.africanlibraryproject.org We encourage you to play the slide show to see the impact of the libraries and the faces of the children as they lovingly handle the books when they arrive.
Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions. Bring on the books!! We will pick up books until the last day of school.
Here is a fact sheet on Africa
Here is a list of the books that we will most treasure:
Baby board books, • Paperback easy readers • Paperback children’s picture books • Paperback juvenile literature/Chapter books • K-8 textbooks (English, math, geography & science) • Encyclopedias & atlases (post 1990) • Paperback dictionaries
