    Dear Loma and CT Parents/Guardians:

    Thoughts from Tuesday Night

    Disaster Fatigue?

I have spoken with so many parents and colleagues about the volume of bad news lately.  Hurricanes, fires, shootings, threats of war and more! The “bad news blues” is a real phenomenon watched by medical professionals at least since the introduction of smart phones.  There are ways to manage the bombardment of difficult news – unplug, meditate, practice gratitude.  There are also lots of sites that focus on positive stories. Even major outlets have “good news” sections featuring content they don’t usually post on their main pages.  I am sure there are evolutionary and biological reasons we humans seem drawn to the negative flow of information. We are hardwired for survival. Anticipating and responding to danger keeps us safe, but how much is too much?  I don’t know.  I just know that finding a balance for ourselves as adults is also helpful to our kids and others we serve.

I did a little poking around for good news, for myself really.  There is a lot of good news out there!  I loved the link of 20 things that went right from July to September.  It’s a good list!  https://www.positive.news/2017/society/29636/went-right-july-september-2017.  Even opposite leaning news agencies like Fox and HuffPost have good news. I looked at my bookmark bar for news and realized it was mostly big name news and emergency information sites.  I have made a commitment to also look at two “good news” sites to balance my information diet.  Here are some examples to positive news outlets I thought I should share:

Notice of Curricular Materials Recommended for Adoption on Display for Public Viewing

For over a year the teachers at Loma and CT have been piloting and implanting the Lucy Calkins Units of Study in Reading and Writing for grades K-8. In addition to the Lucy Calkins curriculum, the Sonday System curriculum has also been piloted by primary teachers (K-2) as it effectively addresses phonics development and has components that can be utilized for K-8 if needed. The teachers have found these materials to be beneficial in supporting student conceptual development of the State Common Core Standards in English Language Arts. Presentations have been made to the Board of Trustees and School Site Council on the effectiveness of these two curriculum options.  The faculty and administration are now recommending these curriculum programs for formal adoption by the Loma Prieta Joint Union School District.   Samples of the curriculum materials are currently on display in the C.T. English library for public viewing and comment.   The materials will be on display through November 18.
