    Thoughts from Tuesday Night


    Flu Season in Full Force

    We are in the midst of a vicious flu season!  I am so sorry that so many families had to deal with the flu as part of their winter break.  Please help us by reinforcing with your kids the importance of staying healthy.  That is our best defense.  If you have not already done so, please consider getting a flu shot.  It’s not too late though it does take a full two weeks for best protection.  The vaccine is not perfect, but it’s a tool.  


    The CDC also recommends "everyday preventive actions (like staying away from people who are sick, covering coughs and sneezes and frequent hand washing) to help slow the spread of germs that cause respiratory (nose, throat, and lungs) illnesses, like flu." Our teaching staff has gone through state required extra training in order to use sanitizing wipes in their classrooms.  We are reminding students about cough and sneeze etiquette and frequent hand washing.  We also need your help to keep you kids home when they are sick.  


    If you have flu in your family, please err on the side of caution and keep your kids home if they show ANY signs of emerging illness.  People can pass on the flu before they know they are sick, as well as while they are sick. This season, some strains of the flu don’t even seem to have fever as a prominent symptom.  The health department cautions that, "Although people with the flu are most contagious in the first 3-4 days after their illness begins, some otherwise healthy adults may be able to infect others beginning 1 day before symptoms develop and up to 5 to 7 days after becoming sick. Some people, especially young children and people with weakened immune systems, might be able to infect others with flu viruses for an even longer time.”  We will send students home for observation if they begin to appear ill.  If your child has a fever, they must remain out of school for at least 24 hours after the fever breaks.  There is nothing so important at school that is worth risking your child’s health or the health of those around them.  Kids and adults have all been hard hit.  Please help us limit the spread of the flu.  If you want more information about the flu, consider checking out these websites.

    Please Make Your Thoughts Heard!

    It’s not too late to get your priorities noted for our Board of Trustees to include in their facilities planning. Do we need field restoration at Loma? Yes!  Do we need to fund part of the post-fire reconstruction?  Yes! Do we need new play equipment in Kinder?  Yes!  Do we need to demolish the old buildings on the Gazebo side of the street?  Yes!  Do we need to restore the buildings we can on that side?  Yes!  There is a lot to do, and limited funding to tackle the projects.


    As most of you know, a major consideration for the Board of Trustees this year is whether or not to pursue bond funding for capital improvements in our facilities. This would involve asking local taxpayers to consider a ballot measure to finance investments in District facilities such as improvements to the Loma and athletics fields, North Campus (gazebo side), post–fire reconstruction, technology and infrastructure upgrades, or future classroom spaces.


    A comprehensive study process is underway.  Our school district values facilities master planning – we completed our LPJUSD Master Plan in August 2016.  To fund identified needs, we are exploring all available options including our own existing budget, State and Federal funding, private grants, and other sources of support.  We are also considering asking our community to support a school bond at some point in the future.  No decisions have been made.  This study process is a priority for the District in the 2017-18 school year.

    To Parents and Students of Loma Prieta:


    I would like to thank all of you from the bottom of my heart for the Hurricane Maria donations.


    We were able to raise in excess of $3,600! As you know Hurricane Maria left all of Puerto Rico without power, water, cell service, and in some instances, it left families, including my own with damaged homes.


    With the monies raised, we were able to get 3 solar generators for my family, books and supplies for Academia Del Carmen School and the remaining funds will be donated to the United for Puerto Rico Foundation.

    Thank you once again for your kindness and generosity. I am very fortunate to live and work in such a caring community. Words cannot properly express how my family and I feel.

    Goodwill Truck Home and School Club Fundraiser Report

    Thank you to all of the students and parents who helped make the Goodwill Truck Fundraiser possible by signing up for volunteer shifts! With your help, the donations we collected weighed in at 20,750 pounds, which translates to $3,014.98. This is the most money that we have raised to date! Both Loma and C.T.E. Home and School clubs will each receive a check for $1,507.49 - WOW! 


    The donations from all of our school families and those of the mountain community in general have made a big difference to Goodwill this year. Thank you for taking the time to make a difference in the lives of so many people who will benefit from your generosity.


    We will be back!  Watch out for the return of The Goodwill Truck to the mountain in early May 2018.  


    We hope to have another successful fundraising event!

    Loma Home and School Club News

    Looking for an afterschool enrichment Class? The Loma Prieta Home and School Club is proud to offer Physic and Chemistry enrichment classes on Friday afternoon with Irvine Lindsey. Irvine is a master science teacher with OSE. His classes are fun and each session is different. Classes will be held on our north campus (near Building Blocks Preschool).     High School Music Info Night

    8th grade students and parents who may be coming to Los Gatos High School are invited to attend an information session offered by the music teachers from LGHS, on Wednesday evening, January 17, at 6:00 p.m. in the Library at Fisher Middle School, 19195 Fisher Ave., Los Gatos. Pizza will be provided for 8th grade students, and a chance to ask questions of both current high school music students, parents and teachers.


    Open Enrollment for the Los Gatos – Saratoga Union High School District

    Each year, LGSUHSD offers an open enrollment application option for students who reside within the district but wish to attend a school other than their school of residence, e.g., for a student who lives within the Los Gatos High School attendance area but wishes to attend Saratoga High School. Note that any intra-district open enrollment transfers approved for the 2018-2019 school year will remain in effect for the remainder of the student’s academic career in LGSUHSD, providing the conditions noted on the application form are met and district residency is maintained.

    The open enrollment period for the 2018-2019 school year will be from January 22nd through February 8th, 2018 and a limited number of spaces are available for students wishing to transfer to Saratoga High School. Applications will be available on the LGSUHSD website www.lgsuhsd.org and at the LGSUHSD District Office at 17421 Farley Road West, during this time. However, they must be turned in no later than February 8th, 2018 by 4:00 p.m. AT THE LGSUHSD DISTRICT OFFICE. Please see “open enrollment” on the district web site at www.lgsuhsd.org for additional information about this process.
