Dear Loma and CT Families:
Thoughts from Tuesday Night
Safe Fun in the Sun!
With the Jog-a-thon just around the corner, I want to share some resources offered by Loma dad, Doug Lewis. We love the sun! Friday is likely to be warm and beautiful. Behind that beauty is a cause of our most common cancer – skin cancer. The easiest way to reduce future risk is to prevent sunburns and limit exposure to UV rays in childhood. Skin cancer rates have increased dramatically over time. Half of the UV ray exposure we receive in a lifetime comes during childhood.
Yes, we want our kids to go outside and play. Let’s support their sun safety as they run!
Protecting kids from over exposure is not too difficult. Hang out in the shade. Longer clothing provides better protection. Encourage wearing protective hats and sunglasses. Apply sunscreen over and over again! For more information on skin cancers and protecting your kids, please see the information from the CDC.
As in all things with parenting, our actions today make a difference down the road.

Dear Parents of 7th and 8th Grade Students:
The California Healthy Youth Act (CHYA) requires that comprehensive sexual health education and HIV prevention education be provided to students. To meet our obligation, the science department at C.T. English will be providing comprehensive sexual health education (middle school curriculum) to all 7th and 8th grade students during the calendar window of May 11 – June 1, 2018.
Per the California Healthy Youth Act, instruction must be medically accurate, age-appropriate, and inclusive of all students, and must encourage students to communicate with parents, guardians or other trusted adults about human sexuality. The following topics must be taught and/or addressed with middle school students:
- Information about HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including transmission, FDA approved methods to prevent HIV and STIs, and treatment.
- Information that abstinence is the only certain way to prevent unintended pregnancy and HIV and other STIs, and information about value of delaying sexual activity
- Discussion about social views of HIV and AIDS
- Information about a student’s right to access confidential medical care resources for sexual and reproductive health care
- Information about pregnancy, including FDA approved prevention methods, pregnancy outcomes, prenatal care, and the newborn safe surrender law
- Information about sexual orientation and gender, including the harm of negative gender stereotypes
- Information about healthy relationships and avoiding unhealthy behaviors and situations.
The Loma Prieta Joint Union School District has selected to pilot the Positive Prevention Plus Middle School Curriculum. A curriculum syllabus outlining the contents of each lesson for the middle school Positive Prevention Plus pilot program is included in this posting. Beginning Friday, April 27, instructional materials will be available to examine during school hours at C.T.’s Front Office.

LPEF KEEP! Campaign Announcement
To Loma Prieta and CT English Parents and Guardians:
It is with great pleasure that we, the Loma Public Education Fund, announce our KEEP! (Keep Excellent Education Programs) priorities and goals for the 2018-19 school year.
Our goal is to raise $120,000, ambitious but very much in line with past KEEP! Campaigns. We simply can't get there without the widespread participation and generosity of our school parents and guardians. It is your contributions that make the education offered at our two schools well rounded, inclusive and comprehensive. As we have done in past years, we are embarking on this campaign in the final fiscal quarter of our fundraising calendar, which runs from July 1st through to June 30. All monies raised during that period are used for the following school year.
The KEEP! direct-donation campaign delivers 100% of all funds raised directly to education and student-support programs at our two schools. Last year, KEEP! proceeds constituted approximately one-third of the annual total of $375,000 raised to fund these efforts. LPEF continues the work from its original charter: funding enhanced and diverse educational opportunities for our children. In consultation with administration and parents (conducted via polling) we have established the following funding priorities for the 2018-19 school year:
Developmental PE @ Loma
Library Services @ CT
Library Services @ Loma
K-8 Student Support Services and Counseling
Core Flexibility and Elective Options for 8th Grade*
Core Flexibility and Elective Options for 6th and 7th Grade*
Technology Instruction: Educational Technology Specialist**
Inclusive Enrichment for Grades 4-8***
K-5 Part time Art Teachers and Supplies
You may have noticed that these priorities look similar to those of the 2017-18 school year. That is because they are the same. These programs and initiatives have proven themselves to be important components in our children's academic education and social development. We hope that you will contribute a KEEP! donation. Our suggested donation is $800 for one child and $1,200 for two or more, but any donation amount is greatly appreciated and will help our community reach the goal. Please visit our website at www.lpef.org/keep for donation information or complete a donation form from our website or in the school offices. These donations are also eligible for matching contributions from many corporations. Please check with your company if they can match. A receipt will be sent to you within a few days of receiving your donation.
As always, if you have any questions or comments, please reach out to me at email@example.com, or another LPEF Volunteer Governing Board member.

Loma Home and School Club News
The Home and School Club is looking forward to Loma’s 31st Annual Jog-a-thon, THIS FRIDAY, May 4!
Students MUST turn in the permission form (also on the pledge sheet) by TODAY, May 2nd. Students will not be able to participate in the Jog-a-thon unless the permission form has been received. If you need a pledge sheet, printed pledge sheets are available in the Loma Office. The pledge sheet is also available for download on the HSC website: http://www.lomaprietahsc.org/jogathon
If you are paying for your pledges with paypal or a check, please remember to put your student's name in the notes section. If paying with a cash, please put your pledge in an envelope with your student's name and "Jog-a-thon" written on the envelope. This will help us greatly with keeping track of pledges.
We are in desperate need of people to wear our Loma Cougar costume and also people to guide around the cougar. If being a class mascot is on your bucket list, here is your chance! The cougar appears for just 5 minutes for each grade, to wave at the kids and take photos while they are warming up. Contact Amy at email@example.com if you are able to help.
We need help for set-up and clean-up. If you haven't signed up yet and would like to help, the sign up link is available here:
We welcome family and community supporters to come and watch or jog alongside your favorite participants. Beforehand, there will be Jog-a-thon t-shirts (free to students with completed permission forms), breakfast morsels, breakfast burritos donated by the Madrigal family and coffee for sale. Kona Ice is also coming again this year.
Students run, walk, or do both for 25 minutes to complete as many laps as possible. All participants who cross the finish line when the final whistle blows will be given credit for that lap.
The starting times are as follows:
- Recess for grades not running: 9:45-10:00
- It is a minimum day - 8:20am – 12:30pm
- Please remember to pack a healthy snack for your student.
We hope to see you there!

I will be relocating to England so looking for a qualified Pilates mat instructor to take care of this loyal, fun group from June onwards. Please contact Norma 408/656-6332 or email@example.com
The African Library Project
Boxes have been placed in the school lobbies. They are to collect children’s books to send to Africa. We are very excited, as this will be the 12th library that will be sent from the Santa Cruz Mountains. Each library consists of 1,000 books so it requires everyone to look through their much-loved, very good condition books for K- 8th graders and bring to school the ones they no longer need. We know children love their books, but it is a wonderful feeling to know that a child will read their books who may never have read a book before. We have sent libraries to Botswana, Zambia, Malawi, Swaziland, Lesotho, South Africa and Sierra Leone. Can your child find these countries on a map? All the details about the project can be found at www.africanlibraryproject.org and I encourage you to play the slide show to see the impact of the libraries and the faces of the children as they lovingly handle the books when they arrive. Please do not hesitate to contact us with any questions. We always need volunteers. Bring on the books!!
