    Dear Loma Families,

Today is the 29th anniversary of the Loma Prieta earthquake.  This is a great time to refresh our conversations about earthquake safety at school and at home.  In order to be prepared at school, tomorrow we will join schools across the world in the Great ShakeOut. The Great ShakeOut earthquake drills are an opportunity to practice how to be safer during earthquakes: "Drop, Cover and Hold On."

I would like to invite you to explore a couple of earthquake preparedness websites since we do live within the San Andreas Fault complex.  The Earthquake Country Alliance has straightforward guidance for preparation, survival, and recovery.  You can find that info here: http://www.earthquakecountry.org/sevensteps/

They also provide useful information to help you get prepared at home: http://www.earthquakecountry.org/step3/index.html

Additionally, it is important to remember that kids experience great stress during an earthquake.  This is true for earthquakes as well as fires, big storms, power outages, and other surprises.  We want our kids to feel confident in their resilience, their capacity to act when necessary.  It’s worth talking with your family, refreshing your plans and supplies, and even printing out the plans and other emergency resources since the Internet is likely to be unavailable.  The Red Cross has a solid check list here:

We all value the sense of community that comes together in difficult times.  A ready community will be stronger and recover more quickly.  Please consider taking some time to help your family have a plan, know the plan, and be ready for whatever comes our way.

My Top Three Moments of the Week

    1. High-fiving 40 kindergarteners as they boarded the bus for the Rodoni Pumpkin Patch. Most were just as excited about their first ride on the bus as they were about the pumpkin patch!
    2. Observing Ms. Flynn’s 3rdgrade class in deep concentration as they worked on making origami bookmarks.
    3. Discovering a group of 2ndgraders cleaning up the balls after recess without even being asked!

    Paul’s Construction Corner

Our reconstruction project is continuously moving forward. Wing A’s roof package has arrived on site and is still expected to begin on 10/24/18. The window installation is underway on Wing A. The canopy that will run along the front of the two buildings and into the entry of the gym is currently getting framed up and expected to be finished by 10/22/18. The doors have arrived as well, and the exterior doors will begin this week. The stucco contractor has started to mobilize on site to be prepared to start lathing the lower sections of the buildings on 10/23/18.

Wing B is in the final stages of its framing and expected to be complete by 10/26/18. We meet with our contractors twice week to go over scheduling to make sure our project meets the schedule. In some cases, this allows us to gain days by identifying issues in advance that could impact the schedule and potentially slow it down. We now are currently 173 days into construction and have had zero injuries during this project.
