Today we are launching Phase 2 of Distance Learning. We will continue with our Monday-Thursday Team Ramsay Zoom Meetings at 9am. I will end the meeting by 9:30- if your child needs to log off earlier please feel free to do so.

Please help your child be successful at our Zoom meetings by:

    • eat before or after our meetings—not during zoom
    • sit at a desk/table and not in bed
    • remove distractions from the camera area (cats, toys, etc.)

The expectation is that 5th graders spend 2-3 hours per day on distance learning assignments which can be found in our Google classroom. Fridays will be used as a catch-up day, to allow students to complete and turn-in assignments.  If your family needs the weekend to finish up assignments in Google classroom, please let me know.

Here is the updated schedule with PE and Advanced Band starting this week. Also here is the student’s digital planner with daily/weekly homework assignment which is posted daily in our Google classroom.

    Grading/Accountability Loma:

    • Loma kids are expected to fully participate in Zoom meetings and complete assignments. Please reach out to me if you have concerns about your child and participating in school.

Additional Zoom Meetings for Advanced Band and PE (Optional):

    • Coach will be hosting a PE class on Mondays at 12:30 (zoom Link is posted in Google classroom)
    • Ms. Lelake will be hosting an Advanced Band class on Thursdays at 12 (zoom link posted in Band Google Classroom)

    Yearbooks:

    Thanks for your partnership

    Hi Parents

It was great to see your kids this morning. After every meeting I post our meeting slides in google classroom.

Here are the highlights for this week—Spelling and Social Studies assignments are due Friday; Math lessons for this week are 16, 17, 18 which are assigned daily starting on Monday and due the next day.  We have added a digital writing journal to the google classroom assignments. I am recording myself reading the book “Restart” and post the videos daily in google classroom. We are discussing as a class if students are interested in doing a “virtual” Walk Through American Revolution.

Also I shared this schedule with the kids. Hopefully this will help with keeping the kids focused and on track. Feel free to post in your house and refer them to it. This schedule is similar to the one we used all year in our classroom.

Zoom & Google Classroom Help From You:

    • Please have your child eat before or after our zoom meetings—not during zoom
    • Please have your child either sit at a desk/table and not in bed during zoom
    • Students may need support in reviewing teacher comments from the previous day assignments or in submitting a new assignment.
    • Students should not spend more than 2-3 hours a day on distance learning. You may increase learning time with enrichment activities and I highly encourage Problem Based Learning offline activities.

Please feel free to reach out if you have questions, need additional support, need to modify assignments to meet your child or your family’s needs, etc.

    Thanks for your partnership.

    Amy

    Hi 5th grade parents,

As you may know from reading Ms. Fraser’s letter the remainder of the school year now transitions from in-person classroom instruction to instruction and support for students through distance learning options as described by California Department of Education (CDE). I am disappointed for all of us, especially my amazing class of 5th graders. Distance learning comes with its own set of challenges, and I am committed to providing my students with ongoing support. The social and emotional well- being of my students is of utmost importance to me. The Loma team is working to find ways to stay connected with our students which will continue to help us learn together and celebrate important milestones. Stay tuned for more info…

Please feel out this Parent Exit Ticket for me so I can see how Week 1 of our distance learning pilot went on your end.

Here are some of the 5th grade benchmarks we are still aiming for:

    •  Students should be completed with 85% of their Khan mission by April 30th.
    •  AR goal for April 30th is 670,000 words

I appreciate your partnership and support more than you know.  I plan to use our spring break as a chance to take a breath, reflect, and recharge. I hope you are able to do the same. I will send out an email Sunday, April 12 with the zoom link for our meeting on Monday, April 13 @ 9am.

Take care and give your 5th grader a high-five from me.

    Amy

We are starting distance learning instruction on Monday, March 30th through Friday, April 17th, excluding spring break the week of April 6th through April 10th.  If you do not have a device at home, please contact Eileen at the district office for assistance e.bevans@loma.k12.ca.us

Here is our 5th Grade Lesson Overview. Students will have daily assignments posted in Google Classroom.  This weekly overview will be posted in google classroom for the students. The district guideline is for 5th graders to spend 2-3 hours per day on distance learning. I understand the many challenges we are all facing…multiple children doing distance learning, internet connection issues, parents working, etc. We are all doing our best to navigate distance learning so please take care of yourself and your family.

I encourage you and your child to reach out to me via email a.ramsay@loma.k12.ca.us with any questions, concerns, etc.

    Thanks for your partnership

    Amy

    Dear Students and Families,

During our school closure, I will be posting to a new page called Suggested Learning Activities. I will make my first post on Monday afternoon. These are activities that will supplement our previous content. They are optional but beneficial and will not be graded.

Until we meet again, I wish you and your whole family a safe and restful spring.

    Thanks,

    Amy Ramsay

If I am requesting a conference, you have already been contacted. After reviewing your child’s report card, please email me if you have any questions and/or want to set a conference.

Thanks in advance for your support.

Pi Day:  We will celebrate on Friday March 13 with some fun activities such as a scavenger hunt and a Pi challenge - how may digits of Pi can you recite by memory? I have prizes to give to the winners! We will also need a few pies to be donated for the celebration. Please let me know if you can bring one in. Any flavor will do, although apple is always a favorite 😉.

Hello again, families! It was a busy week but we were able to end the week with a 5th grade kickball game!

Math: We are plugging away with Module 3! Kids have a great grasp on adding and subtracting fractions. They are showing a lot of grit when working with word problems.

Writing: Next week students will chose a debate topic to write their next persuasive writing piece on. I look forward to reading all the reasons why--- gum should be allowed at school, schools should start later, video games are good for the mind, etc.

Social Studies:  We will be learning about the early New England Colonies of Massachusetts Bay, Rhode Island, Connecticut and New Hampshire. Check it out with your child! www.studiesweekly.com

    CAASPP Testing:

Over the next couple of weeks, we will begin to look at the CAASPP test as a class. The CAASPP is the state test taken by all students 3rd grade and higher. The entire test is taken online. It consists of math and Language Arts and written portions in both. We'll be practicing the tests that are available online to everyone. Check them out to see what these students will be doing: http://www.caaspp.org/practice-and-training/. From this spot, select "Student Interface Practice and Training Tests." Sign-in as a guest and then select Grade 5. Choose any test in the "Smarter Balanced Practice Tests" to preview! Students will be taking different versions of each of the four tests during the testing window in early May. More information will come as we get closer to the test; just want you to know we're going to begin looking at it and practicing it!

Please sign your child’s homework planner daily and help them return their library books every Thursday.
