There is a buzz on campus among teachers and staff that I have not seen for quite some time. They are so excited that students will be coming back to campus. I want to thank all of them for their efforts in the recent days in preparing our learning spaces to be welcoming and safe for students. As I have already said in past messages, this will not be school as usual. So many things will be different. Know that we will be approaching this return with empathy and patience. And I ask the same of you. The flow through our parking lots will be different. Nothing is set up for convenience and comfort. Everything we’ve put into place has health and safety at the forefront.
Additionally, I realize that this return is only 2 days a week. It’s something, but it’s not perfect. You on the home front will still be lifting a heavy burden whether your child is returning to campus in-person or remaining in distance learning. You will still be supporting your children in their learning in varied and complicated ways. I want to thank you for supporting your kids in all the ways you have been and continue to do. I know you read this and think, “well, I had no choice.” That is true, I just want to acknowledge it and thank you!

Remote Learning Attendance Reminder
Please contact your school office for any of the following reasons during remote learning:
- Your child cannot log into class-email the teacher and the appropriate school office.
- Your child had technical issues or other issues that caused them to log into class late.
- Your child will be absent, at an appointment, or leaving class early.
Frequent absences from school are cause for concern. Students who miss just one or two days of school each month risk falling seriously behind. Being absent from school can lead to significant problems. Students who miss many days of school are more likely to fail classes, drop out from school, and have poor relationships with parents, teachers, and peers. Please remember that every absence matters. If you need support with your child’s attendance, please reach out to your child’s teacher or to Billy Martin. Thank you for supporting your child in their attendance at school.

LOMA SPRING PARENT/TEACHER CONFERENCES - APRIL 19-23
K-5 Parent/Teacher conferences are scheduled for the week of April 19th- 23rd. Your child’s 2nd trimester report card will be available to view/print from PowerSchool on April 16th. These reporting dates have been modified to accommodate our reopening and to allow us to have students back in person to provide additional relevant data on their progress. Please note that if your child has an IEP, the Special Education Progress Reporting period will adjust to align with this general education report card period.
NEWS AND UPDATES
K-5 Reopening Information
Thursday 3/4-K-5 Cohort 1 Orientation Day-On Campus. 6-8 students will carry on their usual schedule: Cohort 1 via Zoom, Cohort 2 asynchronous.
- K-2 students in Cohort 1 will be on campus 8:30am-10am. Cohort 2 and Distance Learning students will be provided their learning activities asynchronously.
- 3-5 students in Cohort 1 will be on campus 10:30am-12:00pm. Cohort 2 and Distance Learning students will be provided their learning activities asynchronously.
- K-5 all students can access normal office hours for support if needed.

Wednesday 3/10-K-5 At home for morning meeting, office hours and asynchronous learning activities. 6-8 students carry on classes as usual.
K-5 Drop-Off and Pick-Up
See the attached campus/parking lot map for visual. When you arrive on campus, be on the lookout for signage to support you getting to the right drop-off or pick-up spot. There will be school staff members throughout the pick-up/drop-off areas to support students in getting where they need to go, finding their classes and their line up spots. If your child will get home another way other than being picked up in the parking lot, like walking, biking, scootering home, or being picked up over the walking bridge, please notify your child’s teacher and Ms. Marinin the Loma office via email of these instructions. This will help us make sure kids get where they are supposed to go.
Kinder, 1st and 2nd grade students will be dropped off/picked up in the “Bus Zone” in front of the Music Room and the Loma flagpole.
Third, 4th and 5th grade students will be dropped off/picked up along the Loma playground.
Students need to be masked before leaving their car. Parents will remain in their car.
Walking Bridge- If you are using the walking bridge to access campus, look for signage instructing parents to stop. We are requesting that parents and caregivers not go beyond that point at this time. Follow the directions for students to access campus. 1st-5th grade students will enter campus at the indicated gate along the pedestrian path. Kindergarteners will continue on to the kinder area.
There is no supervision before school starts on campus. Students arriving to campus 8:20-8:30am will go directly to their assigned spot outside their classroom. Teachers will conduct temperature checks before students enter classrooms.
Students presenting with a temperature of 99.5 or higher will be sent to the “Health Check” tent for a second screening. If an elevated temperature is verified, the student will be isolated to wait to be picked up from school after parent/guardian is notified. If the elevated temperature was false, the student will return to class.
K-5 students arriving 8:30-8:50am are not considered late. This window of arrival is provided to alleviate the congestion of the parking lot. Students arriving 8:30-8:50am will report to the “Health Check” tent for a temperature screening. If temperature is acceptable, student will get a pass to class. If a temperature of 99.5 is recorded, a second screening will be conducted. If an elevated temperature is verified, the student will be isolated to wait to be picked up from school after parent/guardian is notified.
K-5 students arriving after 8:50am will be considered late. Students arriving after 8:50am will report to the “Health Check” tent for a temperature screening. If temperature is acceptable, student will get a late pass to class. If a temperature of 99.5 is recorded, a second screening will be conducted. If an elevated temperature is verified, the student will be isolated to wait to be picked up from school after parent/guardian is notified
Daily Home Symptom Screening
TO BE DONE EACH DAY THAT YOUR CHILD WILL BE ON CAMPUS FOR IN-PERSON INSTRUCTION PRIOR TO ARRIVAL ON CAMPUS!!
Each day that your child will be on campus for in-person instruction, parents and/or guardians will be required to complete a home symptom screening. This screening will be completed through PowerSchool. Follow the steps below to access the form via PowerSchool. If you have any login issues, please contact Julie Bourque.
- Login into your Parent Portal of PowerSchool
- Click on Forms in the left-hand navigation menu
- Select the 2021 In-Person COVID-19 Student Daily Check in
- Complete the form and submit
Students who arrive to campus without a completed Home Symptom Screening will be removed from class and a health screening will be conducted.
Travel and Illness
Currently, the guidance from Santa Clara County health officials is to quarantine for 10 days following any travel 150 miles or more outside the county. If this guidance changes, the Superintendent will update the school community with new or changed instructions. Travel should be restricted to travel that is essential. If you travel and are required to quarantine, alert your classroom teacher and Mrs. Bevans. Your child will be able to connect to their classroom via Zoom for the duration of your quarantine without any penalty.
Please do not send your child to school if they any signs or symptoms of illness. If your child is ill and will need to miss school for a day or two, please contact your school office attendance line and your child’s teacher. Your child’s teacher will provide information on making up missed work. If you anticipate that your child will have an extended illness or need quarantining due to COVID exposure, alert your classroom teacher and Mrs. Bevans. Your child will be able to connect to their classroom via Zoom during their illness or quarantine without any penalty.
NEW TRACK AND FIELD
We are so excited that our newly renovated track and field are open for student and public use. But, with students returning to campus, it is important to remind everyone of the rules:
- The track and field and other campus amenities are not available to the public during school hours. School hours are 8am-4pm. If you are on campus during those hours, you will be asked to leave.
- Dogs are not allowed on campus. Many have forgotten this rule over the past year with school closed. But now with students coming back to campus we want to ensure our grass spaces are not used as doggie bathrooms.
- Bicycles, roller blades, scooters, and other wheeled/propelled devices are never allowed on the track. These devices can damage the track.
- We are still adhering to public safety guidelines. If you do visit campus during non-school hours,
ELEVATE ACTIVITY GROUPS
There are spaces still available for students to join! In partnership with Santa Clara County Office of Education and Alum Rock Counseling Center, we are excited to offer the opportunity for 3rd through 8th grade students to participate in an after school enrichment group. These groups will occur via Zoom, are no cost, and space is very limited with these first sessions. See the attached flyer for more information and links to sign up.
VIRTUAL CAREER FAIR FOR K-8 STUDENTS
The Santa Clara County Office of Education is hosting a virtual career fair for K-8 students. This event will feature guest speakers from many different careers, encouraging students to dream big, follow their passions, and explore amazing career opportunities. The virtual event is Thursday March 11th, 1-3pm. See the attached flyer for more information and link to sign up.
