I believe that homework is important. Interacting with the same content twice within 24 hours helps you gain long term memory and learning. The homework usually allows the student to practice the skills learned that day, while the content is till fresh in the student's short term memory. I also think that less can be more, and try to limit homework to 15 minutes of meaningful work. Late homework is accepted, but for a lower grade. The grade is lowered by one letter for each class session that the missing homework is late. I assign the most challenging work like essay writing in class, where I am available to scaffold, and can verify that the student is doing his/ her own work.
