    Dear Loma and CT Families:

     

    New Superintendent Announced Pending Board Approval

    It’s the time of year for winding down and gearing up.  I want to share with you the leadership plans for next year and remind parents of our end-of-year planning traditions.  Pending approval by the Board of Trustees on May 23rd, the next Superintendent of the Loma Prieta Joint Union School District will be Ms. Lisa Fraser.  If that name rings a bell, it is likely because Ms. Fraser has been the principal of Fisher Middle School in Los Gatos for that past 14 years.  Lisa Fraser was selected through a national search conducted by Hazard, Young, and Attea that attracted 20 outstanding candidates.  The Board conducted both first-and second-level interviews to narrow the field to their final candidates.  A staff and community panel also assisted in the selection process, meeting all the finalists and offering input to the selection process.  The Board would like to thank parents and community members Patti Hughes, Julie Scopazzi, and Nicole Gomez, as well as staff members Tony Arias, Karren Zook, April Fulton, Cathy Vance, and Eileen Bevans-Franks for their participation in the process.

     

    Lisa Fraser is an accomplished and widely respected instructional leader who has earned the public’s trust.  Through years of working closely with the Los Gatos High School administration, she has developed a deep understanding of what it takes to prepare students for the transition to our rigorous high school. Under Ms. Fraser’s leadership, Fisher Middle School has been honored as a California Distinguished School and recognized numerous times as an “Asset Champion” by Project Cornerstone.  She is known as a thoughtful, collaborative, and approachable leader with high standards and a big heart. I am excited that the Board has chosen such a fine administrator to join our team.

     

    Also shifting roles into the Principal position is Mrs. Karren Zook.  Many of you have known Mrs. Zook as your child’s kindergarten teacher.  She has also served the last three years as Loma’s teacher leader and has been an active participant in many district-wide committees and projects throughout her years of service.  Mrs. Zook is a tireless advocate for excellence in education.  She is both respected and trusted by her peers and will be a strong leadership partner for the new Superintendent.  Mrs. Carino will remain on the administrative team bringing her depth of experience and strong background in shared governance.  Mrs. Carino will continue to be focused on Special Education and will be increasing her responsibilities in managing a broad range of student support services.

     

    It is hard for me to turn over the reins. It has been challenging for me personally to not have a role in choosing the next superintendent.  I was excited to learn that the new Superintendent is such a highly regarded administrator and strong community builder.  Loma Prieta is very fortunate that Lisa Fraser will be joining our district.  Ms. Fraser is fortunate, as well, to have been selected to become part of the most remarkable Santa Clara County school district. I will be introducing Lisa Fraser at every opportunity as she makes the transition to “the mountain.”  Teachers and staff were introduced to her this afternoon, she attended the Loma Prieta Club luncheon, and is participating in the Superintendent’s Coordinating Council today, as well.  I know you will get to know her and welcome her to our community.

     

    Loma Teacher Requests for 2018-19

    It is natural, and a time honored tradition at Loma, that families are wondering what the configuration and teaching assignments will be next year.  The truth is we never know exactly what the configuration will be, and this year with many transitions, the final staffing decisions will not be made until the new leadership team has fully reviewed the options. 

     

    We will not be assigning teachers to any particular grade level until we can better anticipate our actual needs.  We do however begin our efforts to build balanced groups of kids before the end of the school year.  We do not take “teacher requests,” but if you have specific academic concerns for your child, please make your child’s current teacher aware of those before this year ends. The teachers, Karren Zook and Rebecca Carino will work to finalize balanced classes dependent upon the configuration closer to the new school year.   If you have hopes or concerns for next year, please make sure your child’s current teacher knows them as they are in the best position to build our balanced groups.

     

    CT Electives

    Band is expected to return to CT (please support KEEP to save music in our schools) for all grade levels.  In late July, parents will be notified of the final elective options for each grade level.  If you plan to be out of town in July, please ask a friend to let you know when the elective options open for enrollment.  There are limited spaces available in each class and a number of factors are used to assign electives.  Keep an eye out for the elective email later in July.

     

    The Nuts and Bolts Season

    Graduation/Promotion Attire – It is the time of year when families are choosing promotion/graduation attire for their 5th and 8th grade students.  We always get many questions about the “dress code” for these events.  The bottom line is that these are elementary and middle school events and school dress code is enforced.  No strapless dresses or spaghetti straps without a wrap, shawl or shrug that must remain on.  Shoes must be appropriate for the procession and climbing stairs.  Dress or skirt length must be comfortable to be worn on an elevated stage.  Students generally do dress up a little.  Young men’s shirts should be tucked in or look neat.  Ties are not required.  No low rider pants.  Our events are above a casual level but nowhere near formal.  We want students to be able to participate in the movement associated with the events and not risk embarrassment.  A good rule of thumb is that if you can’t wear it to school, don’t wear it to graduation.  If you have questions, please feel free to ask.

     

     5th and 8th Grade Parents – We Need Your Photos!

    We have begun our graduation/promotion prep.  Please start looking for 3-5 digital photos of your kids that you would like included in our pre-graduation/promotion slide shows.  The photos can be of any age, at school, home, anywhere.  Our slide shows plays before the ceremonies begin.  Please send your photos of 5th graders to Karen Hackett, minorhockeymama@gmail.com, as she has graciously agreed to create this year’s 5th grade slide show and photos of 8th graders to Corey at c.kidwell@loma.k12.ca.us for inclusion in the showcase.  If you have cute photos of groups of kids, I would love to have a few extra of those.  The deadline for submission is May 18th. Don’t have your child be left out!

    Annual “Fore The Kids” Golf Tournament 

    Thank you to all our players, sponsors, vendors & volunteers for making it another successful golf tournament. We sold out again this year and are going for another record-breaking tournament like last year. If you couldn’t join us for golf, join us for dinner at 5:30 pm this Friday ($25 per person).     The Goodwill Truck Back on the Mountain THIS WEEKEND! 

    CT English’s & Loma Prieta’s Home and School Clubs will be sponsoring our 4th Goodwill Donation and E-WASTE Drive Fundraiser this May. Your donations will provide crucial support to the lifelines of the mission at Goodwill of Silicon Valley, as well as support for CTE & Loma HSC! With our past Goodwill Trucks on the mountain, we have raised over $7,300 for our Home and School Clubs! Please continue your efforts to help our students by doing some Spring cleaning and emptying your cabinets and closets. We can’t do it without volunteers, so please sign up to help here: https://m.signupgenius.com/#!/showSignUp/10c084caead2ca5fb6-goodwill We are asking for C.T. parents to volunteer on Saturday and Loma Parents to volunteer on Sunday with C.T. students helping both days to earn community service hours.     Please bring your E-WASTE, old clothes, books, household items, etc. to the Building Blocks Preschool Parking Lot at 23845 Summit Road. The truck attendant will accept donations Saturday, May 19 and Sunday, May 20 from 9AM-4PM both days! (Please do not drop off donations while trailer is unattended.)

    Goodwill Silicon Valley Donation Drive Events Will Gladly Accept All But The Following Donations:

    Los Gatos Rec Adult Exercise Program Opportunity

    Pilates Instructor needed Tuesdays and Thursdays 8.30am to teach at the Loma Temporary Community Room on Summit Road.  Class is run through the LGS Recreation Department.  Has solid group of regular members, many who have been attending for several years. I will be relocating to England so looking for a qualified Pilates mat instructor to take care of this loyal, fun group from June onwards.  Please contact Norma 408/656-6332 or normaliv@gmail.com

    Please note all incoming 7th graders must have a Tdap booster (ADACEL). This is different from a Dtap. Please look at current immunization records and if your student has received a the Tdap booster after their 10th birthday please send the CT office a copy ASAP.
