I was touched by the kind notes that I received from your children as well as watching them pass out Valentines. This is a wonderful group of students. The talent show was a big success and a great way to end the week.

Yearbook Cover Design: 5th graders get a chance to submit their artwork for the cover of the yearbook. The contest has started and will end Friday, March 1.  They need to submit their best artwork to me by the deadline (maximum of 2 entries per student).

Math: We took the Module 4 end of unit assessment and I impressed by the grit these 5th graders are showing in math. We will began Module 5 which is addition and multiplication with volume and area after the break.

Writing: We have finished our opinion writing unit and will focus on informative writing. Students will engage in research, including keeping  track of and citing relevant sources.

Report Cards: In mid-March, we'll have trimester two OPTIONAL parent-teacher conferences and report cards will be handed out. I'll send more information later about when your conference will be held, if I am requesting one - just want to give you a heads up!

CAASPP Testing:  We are practicing the tests that are available online to everyone. Students may practice at home as well.  http://www.caaspp.org/practice-and-training/

From this spot, select "Student Interface Practice and Training Tests." Sign-in as a guest and then select Grade 5. Choose any test in the "Smarter Balanced Practice Tests"!

Enjoy your time with your families (I know I will)!

It was a busy, but productive week in Room 12.  I continue to be amazed by this wonderful group of children. They got a chance to show off their impressive writing skills when Mrs. Zook visited us during writers’ workshop. She was impressed by not only their academic knowledge, but by their behavior and helpfulness to each other. These kids rock!

Math: we are plugging away with Module 4! Kids have a great grasp on multiplying and dividing fractions and decimals. They are showing a lot of grit when working with word problems.

Hello again, families! It was a busy week but we were able to run outside!

Math: We took the mid-module 4 test. I am impressed by how well the students did. Hopefully, all the assessments made it home for parent viewing and signature. We will continue to work on Multiplication and Division with Fractions and Decimal Fractions.

More than 87% of the class has reached the 50% Khan goal. Our next goal is 70% completion by mid-March.

Writing - We continue to work on persuasive writing. We are looking forward to sharing these with our 2nd grade buddies and families.

I have updated our Team Ramsay Wish List and Math Homework Page. The students are hoping for more flexible seating options. Please & Thank You!

Please sign your child’s homework planner daily and help them return their library books every Tuesday.

Wow what a week with lots of indoor recess however, I am so impressed with the perseverance and grit these 5th graders are showing in math.  The math conversations are amazing. Our Khan class goal for the end of January is 50% completion of 5th grade Khan. Most of them are either already there or very close to the goal.  Our AR goal for the end of January is 400,000 words. Please make sure your child is not only reading, but taking AR quizzes after they finish a book. We have many avid readers whose AR word count doesn’t reflect their passion for reading :-)

Writing: This week students chose a debate topic to write their next persuasive writing piece on. I look forward to reading all the reasons why--- gum should be allowed at school, schools should start later, video games are good for the mind, etc.

Social Studies:  We will be learning about the early New England Colonies of Massachusetts Bay, Rhode Island, Connecticut and New Hampshire. Check it out with your child! www.studiesweekly.com

We had our in class Spelling Bee. Congratulations to our top two spellers--Peter & Sophie. They move onto the school-wide semi-finals. From there, the top winners go to the finals!

In Writing this week we began a creative narrative project. Students are writing about being trapped in a snowglobe! They have to make this a realistic fiction piece and consider some key elements: How did you get into the snowglobe? What are you doing in the snowglobe? Are you happy in there, sad, scared? How do you get out of the snowglobe?

Our class has voted to have a holiday Secret Santa gift exchange which will take place at our class party next Friday 12/21. Participation in the exchange is completely optional, but I do ask that they follow through if they choose to participate. Look for an email next week with more details.

Over the next couple of weeks, we will begin to look at the CAASPP test as a class. The CAASPP is the state test taken by all students 3rd grade and higher. The entire test is taken online. It consists of math and Language Arts and written portions in both. We'll be practicing the tests that are available online to everyone. Check them out to see what these students will be doing: http://www.caaspp.org/practice-and-training/. From this spot, select "Student Interface Practice and Training Tests." Sign-in as a guest and then select Grade 5. Choose any test in the "Smarter Balanced Practice Tests" to preview! Students will be taking different versions of each of the four tests during the testing window in early May. More information will come as we get closer to the test; just want you to know we're going to begin looking at it and practicing it!

    Thanks,

    Mrs. Ramsay
