We ended the week with crazy hair day, tie dying shirts for science camp and art in action--what a fun day!

The students worked hard this week taking the Module 1 math assessment and starting Module 2. Module 2 will consist mostly of multiplying and dividing whole numbers and decimals. The Math Homework Help page has videos for the students and parents.

In writer’s workshop, students have chosen one of their personal narratives to become a "published" piece. We will go through the editing process over the next few weeks and look forward to sharing our stories with you.

Hello families! It was a HOT week here and we are loving our air conditioner that you all so graciously donated.

Huge thanks to Tina and Jayme for taking on the Gala basket and treasure.

We met with the Pigeon Point Coordinators and received lots of information. Look for a packet coming home this week with forms, information, etc.  All students must have the online medical form complete. Please let me know if you have questions.

    This week…

Math:  We will be taking the Module 1 Mid-level assessment. All students have successfully logged into Khan Academy and we will be working in the computer lab with Mr. Kissner.  Please make sure your child has headphones that can stay at school. Khan will be assigned as homework about once a week. Please let me know if you do not have access to a computer, internet problems, etc. and I will make sure your child gets additional time at school.

    Social Studies:

We successfully took our first unit test on U.S. States and Regions, and we will begin our next unit on American Indians of the Southwest. Reminder: the entire Studies Weekly newspaper and all of the wonderful support materials are available online to every student! In your child's planner, they have an index card that has all usernames and passwords your child will need this year. Check it out with your child! www.studiesweekly.com

Hello 5th grade parents!  It was wonderful to have so many parents at Back to School Night last Wednesday! Thank you for coming out! I appreciated meeting you all and the questions. It is going to be a great year! If you think of any additional comments or questions, please feel free to email me anytime: a.ramsay@loma.k12.ca.us

Big thanks to Tina Plautz for stepping up to be Room Parent. Jayme & Lila for taking on the Library role.

We are still in need of a parent(s) to help coordinate our class Gala treasure. Please email me if you are able to assist us.

Math: This past week we successfully started Module 1 in Engage New York. Also, we logged into Khan Academy. Khan is an online math program students work with to help build their skills. There are two routes: 1) Mission in which the computer adapts and puts students on skills necessary to grow towards grade-level achievement; 2) Search Engage fifth grade and work through each Module. Route #2 is the route we'll be working on in class and it's what I will encourage students to be doing at home as well. They should work their way through Module 1 first! The program is adaptive meaning it will best suit the needs of each individual learner by providing them content that is accessible to their current skill-set while pushing them to grow. We will be working on Khan at school and occasionally at home.

Pigeon Point: Our student information meeting will be here at Loma this Wednesday Sept. 5th at 10:20. Parents are invited, but not required, to attend. The director of the program, Heidi Plowe, will be happy to answer parent questions after the students are finished. Paperwork will be coming home on Wednesday.

We are off to a great start!

    Hello 5th grade families!

Thank you all for bringing in classroom supplies and returning the back to school forms. For many students, having the right supplies goes a long way in making them feel prepared and boosts their confidence.

Math was informative and helpful and a great way to start our year! We worked with Mindful Math which taught students five most important things to remember when doing math: 1) Everyone can be a "math person," 2) Visualizing math allows your brain to process it, 3) Being good at math doesn't mean you're fast at it, 4) Math is all about finding patterns, and 5) Mistakes allow your brain to grow! These rules have set us up to be successful mathematicians all year! Next week, we will begin Module 1 in Engage New York.

Reading is off to a strong start. Our Readers Workshop curriculum allows children to experience books, share their book suggestions, and journal about their reading. The goal is to be reading seven days a week at home and we read every day here in class as well.

Writing has also started strong. I am impressed with the volume of writing, as well as, the details that the students are incorporating into their writing.

Next week, we start our pullouts for Science, Music, P.E., and Library.

I will talk more at Back to School Night about our curriculum, classroom expectations, homework policy, volunteer opportunities, and of course Pigeon Point.

I hope to see you all at Back-to-School Night on Wednesday, August 29th at 6:30!!!

    Have a fabulous weekend!!

    Mrs. Ramsay

Hello families! We had a wonderful two days of 5th grade. I throughly enjoyed meeting and starting to get to know your fabulous children.

Below are some beginning of the year forms that need to be filled out.

Next week we'll jump into our Language Arts curriculum. We use Lucy Calkins for Reading Workshop and Writing Workshop. Students are writing narratives and get to share stories about themselves. In math, we will ease into the year using a program called You Cubed. This curriculum is put out by a Stanford professor named Jo Boaler and it's titled "A Week of Inspirational Math." It lets the students know how to approach math, what mindset to have to be the most successful, and that mistakes are not only ok but expected!! Check it out here.

I will provide more information at Back to School night on Wednesday, August 29th at 6:30.
Looking forward to an amazing year!
    Mrs. Ramsay
