We are starting distance learning instruction on Monday, March 30th through Friday, April 17th, excluding spring break the week of April 6th through April 10th.  If you do not have a device at home, please contact Eileen at the district office for assistance e.bevans@loma.k12.ca.us

Here is our 5th Grade Lesson Overview. Students will have daily assignments posted in Google Classroom.  This weekly overview will be posted in google classroom for the students. The district guideline is for 5th graders to spend 2-3 hours per day on distance learning. I understand the many challenges we are all facing…multiple children doing distance learning, internet connection issues, parents working, etc. We are all doing our best to navigate distance learning so please take care of yourself and your family.

I encourage you and your child to reach out to me via email a.ramsay@loma.k12.ca.us with any questions, concerns, etc.

    Thanks for your partnership

    Amy

    Dear Students and Families,

During our school closure, I will be posting to a new page called Suggested Learning Activities. I will make my first post on Monday afternoon. These are activities that will supplement our previous content. They are optional but beneficial and will not be graded.

Until we meet again, I wish you and your whole family a safe and restful spring.

    Thanks,

    Amy Ramsay

Report cards were sent home today. Spring Conferences are optional and can be requested by either parent or teacher. Conferences are March 10th-12th. If I am requesting a conference, you have already been contacted. After reviewing your child’s report card, please email me if you have any questions and/or want to set a conference.

Math:  We started module 4 which is multiplying and dividing fractions and decimals.

Writing: We have finished our opinion writing unit and will now focus on informative writing. Students will engage in research, including keeping track of and citing relevant sources.

We will hold an auction the last week of March where they can spend some of their hard earned class dollars :-) Here is our Auction Wishlist- feel free to have your child bring in something or purchase from the list and it will be delivered to the classroom. Thanks in advance for your support.

Pi Day:  We will celebrate on Friday March 13 with some fun activities such as a scavenger hunt and a Pi challenge - how may digits of Pi can you recite by memory? I have prizes to give to the winners! We will also need a few pies to be donated for the celebration. Please let me know if you can bring one in. Any flavor will do, although apple is always a favorite 😉.

I am so impressed with the perseverance and grit these 5th graders are showing in math.  The math conservations around fractions have been amazing. Our Khan class goal for the beginning of March is 66% completion of 5th grade Khan. Most of them are either already there or very close to the goal.  Our AR goal for the end of January is 400,000 words.  Please make sure your child is not only reading, but taking AR quizzes after they finish a book.  We have many avid readers whose AR word count doesn’t reflect their passion for reading :-)

    Talent Show Information

This year's talent show, Loma-Palooza 2020, is on Friday February 28th. The window for applications opened today.  All applications must be submitted on-line and are due no later than 3pm on Friday Jan 24th.

All the information you need, including the on-line applications, can be found here:

I hope that you all have enjoyed this winter break. It was wonderful to relax and spend time with family. I thoroughly enjoyed the gifts and goodies. THANK YOU!

In math, we'll begin Module 3 where students learn to add and subtract fractions. There are videos and homework help on the math resource page on my website.

Our Khan goal is to be 66% complete by March 1st. Many of them are either already there or very close to the goal.

Our Accelerated Reader goal for March 1st is 534,000 words.  Please encourage your child to read AND take the AR quiz after they finish a book.

In writing, we’ll begin our unit on opinion writing. We will be discussing various topics and learning to support our point of view with reasons and information. At the end of the month, students will chose a topic they are passionate about to write an opinion piece on. I look forward to reading all the reasons why--- gum should be allowed at school, schools should start later, video games are good for the mind, etc.

In social studies,  we will be learning about the competition among nations for control of the Florida territory of North America. They will also continue to explore colonial interaction with American Indians.  Reminder: the entire Studies Weekly newspaper and all of the wonderful support materials are available online to every student! We had a productive week. We are finishing Module 2 and will take the end of module assessment next week. The Math Homework Help page has videos for the students and parents.

In writing this week we began a creative narrative project. Students are writing about being trapped in a snowglobe! They have to make this a realistic fiction piece and consider some key elements: How did you get into the snowglobe? What are you doing in the snowglobe? Are you happy in there, sad, scared? How do you get out of the snowglobe?

The Loma Spelling Bee will be given in our classroom on Thursday, December 12.  The 2 finalists from our classroom will attend the semi-finals in the forum at 12:30 on Wednesday, December 18. This is for families of the finalists only.

Our class has voted to have a holiday Secret Santa gift exchange which will take place at our class party on Friday 12/20. Everyone has decided to participate. YAY! I emailed information about the exchange.  Please bring the wrapped gift by Thursday, Dec. 19.

    That’s all for now!
