    Meet our Governing Board:

How to Become a Board Member

  • Any person 18 years of age or older, who is a citizen of the state, a resident of the school district, a registered voter, and not legally disqualified from holding civil office is eligible to be a member of the Board. A district employee may apply for a Board position, but district employment must be terminated upon election or appointment to the Board.

Board elections are held every two years, and are preferably consolidated with local municipal or statewide primary or general elections. The Board of Trustees of the Loma Prieta Joint Union Elementary School District consists of five members, and elections are held every two years, at which time two or three positions are open.

Each candidate is required to write a statement of qualifications pursuant to Elections Code13307 for publication in the election materials. All candidates for Board election are encouraged to sign and adhere to the principles in the Code of Fair Campaign Practices pursuant to Elections Code 20440.

Board member terms expire four years after initial election on the second Friday in December, when the terms of the newly elected members begin.

A vacancy on the Board of Trustees may occur for a number of reasons, e.g., resignation or death of a member. When a vacancy occurs within four months of the end of a Board member’s term, the Board needs not fill the position. However, when a vacancy occurs longer than four months before the end of the term, the Board must make a provisional appointment or hold an election within 60 days. The term of a provisionally appointed Board member expires when the departing member’s term would have expired.
