    Dear Loma Families,

My Top Three Moments of the Week

    1. Welcoming back students from Spring Break. I think everybody grew an inch over the week we were away!
    2. Watching our 7th grader “tour guides” show Loma and Lakeside 5th graders around CT. They also did a great job answering questions during our post tour Q&A.
    3. Hearing the Los Gatos High Jazz Band perform for our 3-8th graders. Amazing!

    Rabbit Run

The annual CT English Rabbit Run (formally known as the Turkey Trot) is right around the corner.  The event will be Friday, April 19 beginning at 12:30 on the Loma Field.  The fun run will be followed by free lunch and dessert provided by our amazing CT Home and School Club and the faculty.  To make this event a success, Home and School Club need your help! Please sign up at the follow link https://www.signupgenius.com/go/5080F4CAEA72AA4F85-rabbit or contactKaren Hackett at minorhockeymama@gmail.com.

You are welcome to help cheer on the CT’ers beginning at the Loma field.  Below are the race times:

    • 6th grade: 12:35
    • 7th grade: 12:55
    • 8th grade 1:15

Statewide Testing Begins on Monday (April 22)

Each year, students in grades three through eight participate in the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP).

This year, your child will take the following test(s), depending on their grade level:

    • Smarter Balanced Summative Assessments for English language arts/literacy and mathematics in grades three through eight
    • California Science Test (CAST) in grades five and eight

The Smarter Balanced Summative Assessments and the CAST are online tests that measure what your student knows and is able to do. The tests include many different types of questions that allow students to interact with the test questions. Results help identify gaps in knowledge or skills early on so your child can get the support needed to be successful in school.

You are an important part of your child’s education. To help your child get ready for the test you can:

    • Talk about the test with your child. Make sure they are not scared or anxious.
    • Tell your child that you and their teacher have high expectations and are both there to help, every step of the way.
    • Take a practice test with your child.
    • Make sure your child gets a good night’s sleep and a nutritious breakfast before testing.

To learn more about the Smarter Balanced Summative Assessments or the CAST, go to the California Department of Education Parent Guides to Understanding Web page at https://www.cde.ca.gov/ta/tg/ca/parentguidetounderstand.asp.

You also can look at sample test questions on the practice tests, which can be found on the CAASPP Web Portal at http://www.caaspp.org/practice-and-training/index.html.

    Spring Picture Day

Mark your calendars for April 30th. Students will have their picture taken outside. More information will be sent home next week.

    2019-2020 New Student Registration Information

Registration is open for new students joining Loma Prieta Elementary and CT English Middle School in the 2019-20 school year.

    Paul’s Construction Corner

Our reconstruction project is continuously moving forward. The striping for the driving lanes and parking spaces in the new parking area is complete. New instructions for drop off, pick up, and parking have been sent out to identify where busses will park and the flow of traffic for parents. Having students take the school bus, or park on the North side of Summit Road and use the pedestrian bridge would still be preferred.

The last portable building was removed during the April recess. Before the reconstruction project can be deemed closed, there are a few open items that will need to be addressed.

The pedestrian bridge which was built in 1996, no longer meets ADA accessibility requirements. The concrete ramp leading from the North field up to the bridge will need to be corrected. The Garden Terrace behind the gym will also need to be brought up to today’s standards, but, due to its construction, it will not require much work to pass its final close out inspection.

The District is working to create a kiln room on the East side of the gym, and remove the rotting wooden siding and replace it with stucco to match the rest of the buildings. Construction on these projects will get performed over the summer.

While we have been working on the reconstruction project of the kitchen and classrooms, the district has been working on other projects.  Asbestos remediation and demolition of the old IHS and day care buildings on the North Campus is underway.  This project is the first of many projects that you will see completed in accordance with the 10-year Facilities Master Plan. The District apologizes for an inconvenience this project may create.
