Important Weekly Updates

September 24, 2014

Dear Loma and CT Parents and Guardians:

Migrating to the Web – Week 2!

We are excited that we are in the process of migrating our communication to the web.  We also recognize that we are a small school district and our enthusiasm is rarely matched with the resources to make things run smoothly all the time.  I certainly appreciate everyone’s patience as we grow.  Most of you have now received our most recent welcome.  Please log in and create your personal dashboard under “Myview”!

Do you have to log in?  No.  Without logging in, you will still receive the Wednesday News But if you do log in, you can subscribe to your child’s class pages, located under the “Contact Information” section on each teachers’ site and get immediate updates from your kids teachers.  Good communication is one of the things we have been striving to continually improve over the last couple of years.  We have put strong tools in place to stay connected to our parent community.  One of the areas we recognize the need for growth is in our written communication.  As a small school district, we have “Our Way,” but so much is not written down or easy for new parents (and we were all new parents once) to find.  By creating an up-to-date web presence we have the opportunity to both share our culture and lower frustration.

Help us by logging on and subscribing to your students’ teachers’ pages.  You can get email alerts when teachers post updates and new pictures.  You can customize the tools your kids use in an easily accessible manner.  None of these improvements would be possible without the generous leadership of Christina Schwabecher.  A Loma parent and huge fan of our community, Christina is committed to strengthening our connections to one another in a multitude of ways.  Christina is currently serving as our Director of Outreach and Communication on a volunteer basis.  She has put in countless hours of service to help us learn and grow.  She is happy to help with any website issues you have.  You can reach her at c.schwabecher@loma.k12.ca.us.

If you have any questions about your log in, please email Christina.  Thank you in advance for your help and patience.

Superintendent

Traffic Head’s Up

The County has indicated that, weather permitting, they will be working on Summit Road paving on Thursday and Friday.  If you have concerns, please contact Santa Cruz County Dept. of Public Works.  You might also consider having your kids use the bus!

Picture Day Update

Picture day is coming!  Thursday will be “picture day” at both schools.  Individual photos will be taken of all students.  We use these photos for formal record keeping, the yearbook, and more.  You are welcome, but not obligated, to purchase copies of the photos.  Order forms are available in both school offices and must be turned in on picture day.  There will be a make up picture day on November 6th for any student who was absent on the first picture day.  Group class photos for Loma (not CT) and our schools “panoramic” will be taken on this “make up” day as well.

The Gala update!

Don’t miss out! Tickets for the Gala are going fast, and we expect this event to sell out again this year!!  Buy yours today at www.lpef.org.

The coveted Loma parking spaces are back on the auction block!  Buy your raffle tickets now to win one of these convenient and highly sought after spots!  Buy them Wednesday after school at pickup or drop off your completed form in the Loma office.

The Gala room behind the gym is open for business and we need your help!  Even an hour here or there is much appreciated.  Stop by any time to see how you can help make this a magical evening!

Your Tax Dollars at Work!

This fall marked the beginning of an era of more stable local funding for our schools with the local investment of Measure H dollars.  These funds will be spent directly on core K-8 academic programs and cannot be used for administrative salaries.  As promised, a Citizen’s Oversight Committee is now being formed to both plan and verify that all funds raised by Measure H are spent in accordance with the law.  The deadline to apply is October 3, 2014, at noon.  If you are interested in serving on the committee, or learning more about Measure H, please contact the District Office at 408-353-1101.  Measure H exemptions for seniors and contiguous properties are available in the District Office or on-line at https://www.loma.k12.ca.us/Page/112.  Thank you again for your continued support of our schools and the youth in our community.  Strong schools protect property values, public safety, and sustain the “mountain way” for the next generation of Loma Prieta residents.

Empowering Women and Girls in Technology

STEM/STEAM is short for Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math!  Our partners at the Parenting Continuum and Los Gatos High School present an evening of conversation and inspiration.  Parents of middle and high school students are invited to join a panel of female engineers and professionals to talk about their career journey and provide information to our female students on how to pursue a career in STEAM.  October 7th, 7-8:30 pm in the LGHS Library.

Cathy Messenger, LGHS Chemistry and Advanced Science Research Teacher

Jenny Chan, Apple

Ayman Nadeem, Khan Academy

April Grow, UCSD Computer Science

Current LGHS students

Please see the attached flyer for more detail.  The Parenting Continuum is a community alliance whose mission is to empower parents to nurture the whole child and the whole family.  You can access their most current program information through the “Partners” section of both school websites.

Drug Drop Off

Another upcoming event sponsored by our partner CASA is the prescription drug and other toxins drop off coming on Saturday, September 27th near downtown Los Gatos.  Unused or expired medications can be disposed of safely.  They are also recycling household batteries, mercury thermometers, cell phones and more.  Please see the attached flyer for more information.

Got Community Service?

All Ct English Middle School students are required to do community service hours. The Leo’s Club is a fun way to take care of the hours serving our local community. See the attached flyer for more information.

Homework Club

Homework Club for CT English students will start today after school in the Library. Our homework club will run every Wednesday from 1:30 pm until 2:45 pm. Bus service will not be available after homework club.

Rebecca’s Top Ten Week 5:

  1. Seventh graders happily engaged in Art in Action;

2.     A shocking Friday event!  Fifth graders challenged the students to raise dollars for ALS and the teachers were the recipients of a successful campaign reward.  Ice cold water over the head!  Thank goodness for Indian Summer days and an extra Jogathon t-shirt.  The students who upended the bucket over my head were exceptionally skillful in ensuring my entire body was soaked;

3.     Two brother’s who skip and trot into the kinder yard; the older brother chasing the younger one to make sure he is delivered in tact;

4.     Gala baskets for auction filling the Gala workroom enhance the excitement for the upcoming event, Saturday, October 4th;

5.     My flower bulbs have arrived!   Look online for how you too can support the Yosemite trip and become the recipient of beautiful spring bulbs.  All are welcome to participate.  Find Juli Siegrist’s page and go her Yosemite page;

6.     Students enjoying academic rewards by being allowed to read under their desks;

7.     Sighted the big black Raven yesterday on the Loma rooftop above Ms. Ignoffo’s room.  He did a litter chatter of a greeting and then flew off.  Was happy to see him, first time this year;

8.     Visiting with parents in the cool morning air before school;

9.     Listening to a student’s detailed description of how to get better at drawing.  Her quote, “keep practicing.  Practice all the time;”

10.  My daughter doing yard duty.  She loves me.  You too can get in on the action.  Look for details coming soon or… just come in and ask how you can get involved.  It is soooo cool!
